Travel + Leisure Names Mountain Trek “World’s Best Destination Spa”

Best International Destination Spa in the World

One of the most popular travel magazines in the United States has just honoured us with an incredible award. Mountain Trek Fitness Retreat and Health Spa has just been named #1 International Destination Spa by the Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards for 2016!

The online announcement was made July 6 and the official recognition will appear in the August 2016 issue of the magazine. In the recent release Travel + Leisure wrote:

“The No. 1 destination spa outside of the U.S., Mountain Trek, in British Columbia, Canada is a retreat that specializes in weight loss. It ‘offers guests a phenomenal, dynamic boot-camp vacation while also providing an upscale resort experience,’ said one T+L reader. ‘The holistic approach to weight loss focuses on activities including hiking, yoga, and massage therapy, and a variety of fitness an nutrition classes.’”

Travel + Leisure AwardsThe Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards asks readers and members of the general public to rate top hotels and resorts based on six categories – and Mountain Trek beat competitors from all over the world to win top honours for our:

  1. Accommodations/Ambience
  2. Treatments
  3. Service
  4. Food
  5. Facilities
  6. Value

Mountain Trek scored 98.13 out of 100 in the awards and the resulting write-up said, “Amazing food and you really lose weight.” It sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t: Mountain Trek Health & Fitness Retreat offers a boot-camp-like approach to fitness and meals that promote real weight loss. Guests are divided into groups based on their ability, and given a group leader. Over the course of their stay, guests participate in four-hour hikes, eat portion-controlled spa cuisine (think crab cakes with tricolor coleslaw and lemon-ricotta pancakes), and attend lectures on sleep, stress management, and nutrition—all while surrounded by mountains, meadows, and forests."

It then went on to say, "For 16 years, Mountain Trek Health and Fitness retreat has guided guests toward feeling fit and strong while in a enjoying the beautiful atmosphere of British Columbia. The all-inclusive weightloss retreat gives guests access to not only the great outdoors, but to nutrionists, massage therapists, fitness coaches, 24-hour gym facilities, an on-site chef, and much more. With an emphasis on fitness, detoxification, and relaxation, Mountain Trek provides a peaceful and wholesome retreat experience."

Outside Magazine Features Mountain Trek

Outside-Magazine

One of the most popular outdoor magazines in the United States has just featured Mountain Trek in its "Destinations" section. Outside, which first hit newsstands in 1977 and launched the careers of such famous outdoor writers as Tim Cahill and Randy Wayne White, has a mission statement that Mountain Trek can stand by, namely, "to inspire active participation in the world outside."

In the June 2016 issue the magazine features adventures that travellers and residents alike must do in the province of British Columbia – and Mountain Trek is listed! In the article writer Stephanie Pearson describes her experience taking part in the week-long fitness program and says the view from the hiking trail of "the Valhalla Mountains in the west to the Kokanee Glacier in the south filled my soul." She goes on to describe her interactions with Kirkland Shave, Mountain Trek's program director:

"Shave, a former Parks Canada ranger, has fierce energy and a wry sense of humor, making him the perfect leader for this intense boot camp. I'd signed on to a seven-day trip designed to detox my body and reboot my brain. But the magic of Mountain Trek is that it never felt like punishment. The program is based out of a peaceful 15-room lodge overlooking 65-mile-long Kootenay Lake. All guests adhere to a strenuous but enjoyable exercise regimen, inroporating yoga, weights, hiking, and massage."

Redbook Features Mountain Trek

Mountain Trek featured in Redbook Magazine

One of the most well-read magazines in America has just listed Mountain Trek as one of the best places to lost weight and be pampered too. Redbook, which is famous for being one of the longest running and most respected women's magazines in the United States, recently featured an online article called "10 Weight Loss Retreats That Basically Feel Like a Spa Weekend" and placed Mountain Trek at the top of the list.

In the article writer Samantha Lefave suggests Mountain Trek is a mountain lovers dream thanks to "stunning views, a wide variety of trails, and abundance of natural hot springs."

She goes on to write, "Not only will you get to do daily hiking, yoga, and a slew of other fitness classes, but Mountain Trek guests also receive a personalized program of massage therapy, detox treatments, and nutrition classes all catered to your specific needs. In other words, if you're looking to stoke your metabolism, there's a fitness, food, and health class for that. Not enough? After you've been a guest once, there's the option to participate in their Adventure Trek program, which takes guests on an international adventure. The locations vary by year, but so far they've covered six to eight miles daily in Japan, the Amalfi Coast, and Bhutan."

Mountain Trek has good company in the piece as Rancho La Puerta in Mexico, Golden Door in California and The BodyHoliday in St. Lucia are all listed. But unlike the other spas and resorts, Mountain Trek's program guarantees fat loss while also targeting sleep habits, improved fitness levels, stress reduction and detoxification.

Mountain Trek Is The Perfect Bachelorette Destination Say 2 Writers

Friends-hiking-together

Mountain Trek has been featured in two articles recently that describe our health program as the perfect fitness-focused destination for brides-to-be. In her recent JetSetHerBlog.com article, Jamie Gaul writes that you’ll leave your bachelorette party at Mountain Trek “feeling like a new woman” and Alison Lewis writes in her HealthyTravelMag.com article that Mountain Trek is “the perfect retreat just before the big day!” Both place a spotlight on the hiking and how brides and their bachelorette parties can get fit before the big day, rather than derail all their hard work.

In her article Gaul writes, “Every time I get a wedding invite, I know a bachelorette party is in store and that means too much wine, too much food and a week-long hangover. Bachelorette parties don’t have to derail all the hard work you’ve done to get your wedding day bod. These locations are fun, relaxing and have your wellness in mind. So long, Vegas!”

Gaul then goes on to describe Mountain Trek saying, “A true backcountry experience, Mountain Trek offers the bride-to-be and her bridal party a dynamic ‘boot camp’ vacation. Yes, I know bootcamp and vakay aren’t exactly synonymous but trust me, you’ll emerge from this bachelorette party feeling like a new woman. Set in spectacular natural landscapes, guests spend time hiking, practicing yoga, indulging massage therapy and have access to a variety of fitness, detox and nutrition classes Average weight loss for a one week program ranges from 4.5 – 6.5 lbs per week for women. You may even need your wedding dress taken in after this trip!”

In her article entitled “Health Inspired Bachelorette Destinations” Alison Lewis writes, “Set in the most spectacular natural landscapes, (Mountain Trek) guests are treated to an ultra personalized program and spend time focusing on activities including hiking, yoga, massage therapty, detox treatments and a variety of fitness and nutrition classes.”

Mountain Trek has hosted many groups of women throughout the years and we even wrote our own article about “Why Mountain Trek is the Perfect Girls Getaway.” Here are just a few of the reasons why a healthy bachelorette party at Mountain Trek is such a good idea:

  • Spend some much-needed time with your friends away from all the distractions of your daily lives
  • Enjoy the world-famous hotsprings five minutes from our lodge
  • Lose weight before putting on that wedding dress and look beautiful on your big day
  • Learn healthy habits that will stay with you long after you leave our luxurious lodge
  • Have a guaranteed support network when you get home

Review Magazine Features Mountain Trek

lodge at mountain trek in british columbia

Mountain Trek has been featured in Review Magazine’s “Exercise Escape” article in which writer Leigh Doyle interviews program director Kirkland Shave and discovers why more people are turning away from beach lounging and choosing instead to “unwind at fitness retreats to kick-start healthy new habits.”

In the interview Kirkland is quoted as saying that people, typically urban professionals, visit Mountain Trek because “they want to change their body look and feel because that’s a visceral experience that their lives are back on track.”

The article goes on to detail the experience of a Mountain Trek alumni named Jean Aldridge who’s a financial planner in Orange County, California. She attends Mountain Trek every six months because it gives “her insights into how to make her day-to-day life healthier, and it also helped her lose about 10 pounds…it even helped keep her active after she returned home. She added more Pilates classes to her schedule, began walking after dinner and used her infrared sauna more regularly. She’s watched the extra weight disappear and, months later, has kept it off.”

Mountain Trek has good company in the piece as The Ashram in California and the Men’s Fitness Boot Camp Vacation in Florida are also listed but unlike the other spas and resorts, Mountain Trek’s program guarantees fat loss while also targeting sleep habits, improved fitness levels, stress reduction and detoxification.

Writer Leigh Doyle goes on to say in the article, “For people looking to lose some weight, a week-long fitness vacation can get the ball rolling…it can kick-start motivated individuals into making serious changes by showing them how regular exercise, proper eating and dedicated de-stress time can do the body good.”

Book Mountain Trek for you or a loved one this year and enjoy the amenities that only our all-inclusive resort can offer:

  • complimentary massages
  • delicious boutique spa cuisine
  • natural hot springs
  • infrared sauna, outdoor hot tub and cold plunge pool
  • luxurious lodge in a natural setting far away from urban stressors

“I Survived Adult Fat Camp” – Fitness Magazine features Mountain Trek

Mountain-Trek-Program-at-Rancho-La-Puerta

The headline may be a bit sensational but we enjoyed reading Juno DeMelo’s first-person story of her time spent experiencing the Mountain Trek program at Rancho La Puerta that recently ran on fitnessmagazine.com.

The reason Juno decided to take part in the Mountain Trek program is because, “I’m not fat or out of shape, but I’ve put on a few pounds over the last three years. And though I hate the idea of dieting, I like a challenge. I also figured that not having constant access to food would help me separate real hunger from the fake kind that tends to pop up when I’m bored or stressed. So, I packed my bags…with the hope of gaining energy and losing weight.”

The article then details what Juno experienced day-to-day while enrolled in the program, from morning yoga classes to day hikes to after-dinner workouts. She also spent a large part of the story talking about food.

Fitness Magazine features Mountain Trek

“I never felt stuffed, but I felt full for a couple of hours after each meal,” Juno writes. “By the third hour, it was time to have a snack, which usually – and surprisingly – held me over to dinner. By day five my appetite downshifted and…I felt satiated. The hikes started to feel more doable (and) I stopped fantasizing about cheesecake…”

By the seventh day it was time for the weigh out and Juno learned she had lost 5.2 pounds. “I was elated.” she writes. She then goes on to describe one of the best parts of the Mountain Trek program, namely the post-retreat support plan. “They say that if I keep this up, I should be able to maintain my weight loss and maybe even continue to drop 1/2 to 1 pound a week until by body hits its happy point…I now know I’m strong enough, mentally and physically, to hike for eight miles a day, six days in a row. That I can be a little bit hungry without the world crashing down. And that while food is still one of the great loves of my life, I’ve probably been over-romancing it.”

Forbes says Mountain Trek is Perfect Christmas Gift

One of the most well-read business magazines in America has just listed Mountain Trek as #1 on its "Luxury Wellness Holiday Gift Guide 2015." Forbes, which is famous for its rankings including the Forbes 400 that lists the wealthiest people in America, recently shared 14 gift ideas in an article by Ann Abel that ranged from health and fitness retreats, such as Mountain Trek, to a high-end gym bag and the DreamWave massage chair. In the article Ann suggests Mountain Trek is an excellent gift "For Him" because "the regimen, while challenging, is mountain-man outdoorsy: long hikes through the Canadian Rockies in which you’re expected to be breathing too hard to carry on a conversation. The take-home advice, about everything from sleep to stress, is solid, not woo-woo. No wonder so many of the 16 guests each week are men." Mountain Trek featured on Forbes Mountain Trek has good company in the piece as SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain and Mountaintop Reboot in Aspen are also listed. But unlike the other spas and resorts, Mountain Trek's program guarantees fat loss while also targeting sleep habits, improved fitness levels, stress reduction and detoxification. Ann goes on to say in the article, "who doesn’t want to help their loved ones feel and live better? These wellness gifts are sure to be accepted in the spirit they’re given (and just might benefit the giver as well)." We couldn't agree more. The best gift you can give a loved one is improved health and wellness. If you've noticed that your mother or father are working too hard lately, or your wife or husband can't sleep, or you've just found out your 40-year-old son or daughter is at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, then give them the gift that will always give back: their health. Book Mountain Trek for you or a loved one for a holiday gift this year and enjoy the amenities that only our all-inclusive resort can offer:

  • complimentary massages
  • delicious boutique spa cuisine
  • natural hot springs
  • infrared sauna, outdoor hot tub and cold plunge pool
  • luxurious lodge in a natural setting far away from urban stressors
